Ohio Licensing Requirements
The Ohio Optical Dispensers Board requires all dispensing opticians to hold an active license. Ohio's requirements are straightforward and align with national standards.
Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Must be of good moral character.
Complete one of the following:
- Associate Degree: 2-year AAS in Ophthalmic Dispensing from an accredited program
- Apprenticeship: 2 years (4,000 hours) of supervised training under a licensed optician or optometrist
Pass both national certification exams:
Spectacle dispensing competency - 125 questions
Contact lens fitting - 125 questions
Fee: $75 per exam ($150 total)
